- Our Story

Born in Australia, back in 2022.

Purple Giraffe Press began in 2022 with a simple but powerful conviction. Children's literature should do more than entertain. It should spark curiosity, build empathy, celebrate imagination, and reflect the rich, diverse world that children actually live in. From our very first title, we set out to make books that children return to again and again. Stories that grow with them, that they quote at the dinner table, and that they press into a friend's hands saying “you have to read this”.

Australia has always been a place of extraordinary storytelling, shaped by ancient voices, wide open landscapes, and a deep spirit of adventure. It was here that Purple Giraffe Press took its first breath. What started as a small, passionate team of writers, illustrators, and educators has grown into one of Australia's most loved children's publishing houses, with titles on bookshelves, in classrooms, and under pillows across the country and well beyond it.

  • Proudly Australian, with stories that travel the world
  • Picture books, chapter books, and middle grade
  • Award-winning illustration handled in-house

What we believe

A great children's book is a powerful thing

In the hands of a child, a good book becomes a portal to other lands, other lives, and other possibilities. It teaches without lecturing. It comforts without patronising. It challenges without overwhelming. That belief shapes every decision we make.

A

In children

We believe in their instinct for a good story, their capacity for wonder, and their ability to carry a book with them long into adulthood.

B

In illustrators

We believe in the artists who pour weeks into a single spread, so a child will gasp when they turn the page.

C

In editors

We believe in the editors who fight for the right word in the right place, on every line of every book.

D

In authors

We believe in our authors, from debut voices to beloved names, who trust us with their most personal and most daring work.

- What we publish

Stories for every stage of childhood.

Our catalogue spans picture books for the very young, chapter books for growing readers, and middle grade adventures for those discovering just how extraordinary literature can be. We publish fiction and non-fiction, poetry and prose, laugh-out-loud comedy and quiet, tender stories that stay with you for a lifetime.

We are especially proud of our Australian voices and settings, from the bush and the reef to city apartments and country towns, with characters who sound like real Australian children and families. Alongside these, we champion stories that travel across cultures and continents, because reading about a life different from your own is one of the greatest gifts a book can give.

- Our people

A team that loves this work.

Behind every Purple Giraffe Press book is a team that genuinely loves what it does. We are parents and former teachers, lifelong readers, and passionate advocates for children's literacy. Many of us can tell you exactly which book made us fall in love with reading, because that moment never leaves you.

We work closely with our authors and illustrators at every stage, because the best books are built on deep collaboration, honest feedback, and an unwavering commitment to quality. We take the long view. We are not chasing trends. We are building a body of work that will still matter in ten, twenty, and thirty years' time.

Our impact

Access to books is not a luxury. It is a right.

Since 2022, Purple Giraffe Press has donated thousands of books to schools, libraries, hospitals, and community organisations across Australia. We partner with literacy charities, support underfunded school library programmes, and work with educators so our books are genuinely useful tools in the classroom, not just beautiful objects.

We measure our success in the letters we receive from children who say a book changed how they see themselves, in the teachers who tell us a title turned a reluctant reader into an enthusiastic one, and in the parents whose child has read a book so many times the spine has finally given way. Those are the numbers that matter most to us.

- Looking forward

More excited about children's books than ever.

All these years on from where we began, the stories being written today represent some of the most vital and creative work happening anywhere in publishing. We feel privileged to be part of it. We are committed to growing our catalogue thoughtfully, supporting emerging Australian talent, and finding stories that matter to the children reading them right now, and to the adults they will one day become.

Thank you for being part of our story. We hope our books have been, or will soon become, part of yours.
